(CNN) -- Supporters and opponents of deposed Egyptian president Mohamed Morsy clashed in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Monday, leaving one person dead and seven others injured, according to Egyptian state news.

The clashes come nearly three weeks after Morsy, backed by the Muslim Brotherhood, was forced out of office by the Egyptian military.

Egypt has been on edge ever since, with dozens reported killed and thousands injured in protests.

Monday's clashes came after Morsy supporters gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. Egyptian security forces fired tear gas to disperse them, state-run EGYNews reported.

After leaving the embassy area, Morsy supporters went about a kilometer to Tahrir Square, where the clashes with Morsy opponents happened, EGYNews reported.
