SHANGHAI: A young woman in China, who lost the lower part of her face at a young age, will soon be getting a nose and mouth - transplanted from her chest.

Jin Qi, 27, underwent surgery lasting more than 10 hours in Shanghai on Monday (April 10), Xinhua news agency reported.

It was just the first of four operations she will go through in the next six months to replace her facial organs.

Jin lost her nose, lips and part of her face after a high fever and rare sepsis when she was one year old.

In her remote village in central China's Hubei Province, Jin could not get the medical help she needed.

Monday's surgery aimed to correct maxillary, or upper jaw, deformities.

The tissue for her nose and lips were cultivated on her chest, Chinese reports said.

Surgeons also used 3D printing technology to fashion implants to help reconstruct her face, SCMP reported.

After graduating from college, Jin moved to Shenzhen to pursue her passions - design and photography.

She posted her story online, and crowdfunded her medical expenses from netizens.

This is not the first time such a transplant, which involves growing an organ on the patient's body, has been conducted in China.

But it is the first time it will be done on a patient who lost her facial organs at such a young age, Xinhua said. - The Straits Times/Asia News Network - sumber
