A retired civil servant believed to have been an advisor to a former PM has been arrested in relation to firearm offences.
GEORGE TOWN: A retiree, believed to have been an advisor to a former prime minster, has been arrested by police in connection with possession of fake firearms.
The 55-year-old man was arrested from a house in Permatang Sungai Dua on the mainland in Penang, on Jan 4 following a tip-off received by the police.
State police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi however only described the man as a retired civil servant and declined to elaborate further when asked on the nature of the man’s job during a press conference at the state police headquarters here earlier today.
“All I can say is the suspect has received proper training and is experienced in handling firearms,” he said.
The man, he said, has since been remanded for seven days to assist in police investigations from the date of arrest.
The case is being investigated under Sections 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960 and Section 7(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
Abdul Rahim said a thorough search around the house had led police to recover a Beretta type gun with a magazine filled with 11 rounds of ammunition, a fake gun loaded with a magazine, a homemade air rifle, a hand rifle and two pump guns and a bag containing an empty magazine, 14 bullets of different makes, a pair of handcuffs and a small bottle containing ball bearings.
Abdul Rahim added that the suspect did not possess a carry & use (C&U) license for all items in his possession.
“He has five past criminal records for various offences including for drug related offences but was not on the police wanted list.
“A urine test on him came out positive for methamphetamine type drugs,” he said.
Abdul Rahim added that police were still ascertaining whether the firearms were being kept for personal use of for other purposes.
