Juan Gonzalez, 69, was arrested after cops were alerted to a problem inside the Wilson St. property in Brentwood and found Teresa Astete dead in her bed - and her son alive but injured from his botched suicide attempt, cops said.
Gonzalez is believed to have killed his mother last Sunday and stayed in the home with her corpse for nearly a week before phoning his sister to inform her that their mother was dead.
The son had cut himself and attempted to overdose on drugs, officials said. He was charged with second-degree murder.
Gonzalez was his mother's primary caretaker and had no known history of mental illness, according to a Suffolk County police spokesman, who would not comment on Astete's health.
Police were not treating the death as a mercy killing.
He was rushed to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for medical attention, where he was awaiting arraignment, officials said.
