Vincent Tan is not afraid to speak his mind
Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan has landed himself in hot water after making a desperate plea with players in a bid to help the club avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Tan, who is one of the most colourful owners around, reportedly stormed into a team meeting at the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane before Cardiff’s weekend clash with Tottenham.
He crashed the meeting to tell players ‘they need to shoot more’ if they are to score the goals needed to avoid slipping back into the Championship.
He then offered the squad a bonus of £3.7million, to be shared among them, if they stay up – although this ‘illegal’ offer has alerted the FA.
Cardiff lost 1-0 to Tottenham after the clash
Under official rules, all bonus offers must be made before the start of the season, with FA officials now poised to write to Tan to explain fully.
Cardiff could face a points deduction if the FA decides it wants to make an example of Tan, while a spokesman says he wasn’t aware he’s done anything wrong.
The spokesman said: ‘We didn’t realise it was against regulations.’
The shooting advice nor the offer seemed to do the trick though, with Cardiff eventually losing 1-0 to Spurs.
