A pensioner is lucky to be alive after impaling himself in the eye with a pair of pruning shears.
Leroy Luetscher had been gardening outside his home in Tucson, Arizona, when the horrific accident took place - but amazingly he is expected to make a full recovery.
The 86-year-old had dropped the shears which landed point-side down in the ground, only to lose his balance and fall face down on the handle when he went to pick them up.
The handle of the shears penetrated Mr Luetscher's eye socket and went down into his neck, resting on his external carotid artery.
The pensioner was rushed to hospital with half the shears left in his head, with the other half sticking out.
Surgeons managed to removed the cutters and rebuild his orbital floor with metal mesh, saving his eye.
Dr Julie Wynne, assistant professor in the University of Arizona Medical Center surgery team, said: 'You wouldn't believe your eyes. Half of the pruning shears was sticking out and the other half was in his head.'
Dr Lynn Polonski, clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology, said: 'You just wonder how the handle of the pruning shears got there.
'The handle was actually resting on the external carotid artery in his neck.
'We decided we could safely remove the pruning shears and are so happy that Mr Luetscher did not lose his eye or any vital structures.'
Mr Luetscher has some swelling in his upper and lower lids, as well as some double vision in the affected eye.
However, medics at the hospital said he is remarkably expected to make a full recovery following the accident on July 30.
Mr Luetscher said: 'I am so grateful to the doctors and staff at UMC.'
