Najib asked Thai PM Yingluck to BLOCK Dr Ponthip from conducting 2nd autopsy on Sugumar
Written by Wong Choon Mei, Alaa Soleiman, Malaysia Chronicle
UPDATE 2 Lawyers for the Sugumar family dropped a bombshell on Thursday, revealing that Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak had asked the Prime Minister of Thailand to block renowned pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunan from carrying out a second autopsy on the dead security guard who had died under mysterious circumstances involving several Malaysian police officers.
"As a result of the communication, the Thai government decided that Dr Pornthi should not conduct the autopsy in order not to undermine the relationship between the two countries," N Surendran, one of the lawyers told a press conference at the PKR headquarters in Tropicana, Petaling Jaya.
"We received this information in writing and from an impeccable source and we are ready to stand by it. This is conduct of the lowest kind and we call on Najib to put things right. The family has gone through great efforts to get Dr Pornthip to agree to come and now they are let down in this despicable manner."
Surendran, who is also a vice president in the PKR party led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, declined to reveal the identity of the source but said it was from an "authoritative" person.
Sivarasa Rasiah, the Subang MP and whose firm is also representing the Sugumar family, called on Najib to reveal the circumstances of Pornthip's withdrawal and to "correct the problem, write to the Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawat and secure the services of Dr Pornthip for the family".
According to eye-witnesses, Sugumar was chased down by the police, handcuffed, beaten and smeared with turmeric. One of the police officers had stepped on his neck while his colleague put on the handcuffs. Sugumar's body had still been moving at that point in time. It later stopped moving but the police did not notice he had died until hours later.
The Malaysian police have insisted Sugumar died of a heart attack, basing their conclusion on a post-mortem report released from the Serdang Hospital.
"We thought that the government would act fairly towards us. We were forced to wait 5 hours at the mortuary and his body was still in handcuffs. The family was in grief and we cried," Sugumar's uncle who was also at the press conference said.
"We have no confidence he died of a heart attack. We believe something is being hidden and this is why we asked for the second autopsy but it has been 2 weeks and nothing has happened. We asked for Dr Pornthip, we don't know what happened between the two governments. Our Prime Minister seems to have blocked this. It is not fair. We want remedy for Sugumar's death, can you give back a human life."
