Will Dyana take Umno’s bait?
There is talk that she is being wooed into the BN camp to be used to smear the opposition.
Even though BN has retaken Teluk Intan, its leaders, especially those in Umno, are probably still shaking in their shoes with the knowledge that there are hundreds more Malays like Dyana Sofia Mohd Daud out there who can help Pakatan Rakyat win the next general election.
This fear is understandable. After all, Umno is at the crossroads of its political life and staring at possible death in the 14th GE.
There is talk that efforts are under way to woo Dyana into the BN camp so that she can be used to smear DAP and Pakatan.
We know enough about money politics in Malaysia to suspect that this is yet another instance of it. Umno will probably pursue this course of action vigorously.
No stone in this dirty political game will be left unturned and we can be sure a huge pile of money will be set on the table. According to some rumours, Dyana’s mother is also being baited.
It is very much up to Dyana to show us how strong her commitment is to the cause of the opposition. It must be a nerve racking time for her and her mother as they do some serious soul-searching. Her mother, being an Umno and Perkasa member, may well tip the scales in Umno’s favour.
However, DAP has been treating Dyana well and she is on record as saying that she regards the party as her family.
Tunku Abdul Aziz ibrahim, a former vice president of DAP and now one of its harshest critics, has predicted that she will follow in his footsteps and leave the party. But it is doubtful that an old-school man like him can correctly read Dyana’s mind.
If she chooses to stay with DAP, her political future is bright because Pakatan is getting stronger by the day. She must bear in mind that her achievement in the Teluk Intan by-election was not hers alone since she had the good reputation of DAP to back her.
Had she joined Umno instead, she might have had to wait her entire political life to be considered a candidate for a state assembly seat, let alone a parliament seat.
Bigots and opportunists
Dyana epitomises Generation Y. Many educated Malays have transcended the politics of race and religion and will rally behind her. This generation is bent on pushing for justice, freedom, accountability and good governance, which are principles that don’t resonate well with Umno, infested as it is still with bigots and opportunists who thrive on cronyism and nepotism.
Umno is an old boys’ club. Many of its key officials have long passed their expiry dates as politicians. It is shunned by the educated and talented members of Generation Y. That is why we can hardly find young and capable new blood in its midst.
Umno is becoming less relevant by the day and it won’t be long before it goes into oblivion. MCA, MIC, Gerakan and all those other BN components are in a similar situation and will follow suit.
They have systematically mismanaged the country, resulting in sovereign federal debt of more than RM800 billion, or more than 56% of the national GDP. This debt may still be rising.
In its attempt to deal with the problem, the BN government has removed food and fuel subsidies and is going ahead with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax. Even electricity tariffs have increased. And car prices are expected to go up again even though they are already higher than in most other parts of the world. How much more can we take?
Meanwhile, talented Malaysians from the marginalised minorities will continue to leave this country to escape BN’s race based policies. Only the mediocre will remain. If the powers-that-be persist with mediocre policies, Malaysia will eventually regress into backwardness.
Dyana and others like her should steadfastly remain with the opposition to help right-minded Malaysians topple BN and Umno once and for all.
We must do whatever we can to save Malaysia before BN ruins it.
