Kadazandusun leader sounds stern warning to show regard for Kinabalu's place in native culture
Joseph-Pairin-Kitingan_kkb_600KUNDASANG: Joseph Pairin Kitingan, Huguan Siou or paramount leader of the Kadazandusun community, has issued a stern warning to visitors and climbers to respect the sacredness and spirits of Mount Kinabalu.
“Climbing the mountain should be something enjoyable and no one should do anything against our culture,” he said at a press conference at Kinabalu Park operations centre today.
“Each individual may have his or her own belief and views but Mount Kinabalu is a sacred place for the people of Sabah.”
Pairin, who is also Sabah deputy chief minister said: “We will hold a ceremony to appease the spirits of the mountain. However the climbers must reciprocate by not doing anything uncivilised.
A moderate earthquake registering 5.9 on the Richter scale shook Ranau at 7.15 am yesterday, causing rock falls on the mountain and stranding more than 100 climbers and visitors on the mountain slopes.
Eleven people are known to have died with nine more bodies discovered today at Mount Kinabalu. Two bodies were brought down last night.
The mountain was in the news in the days before the earthquake with public anger at the actions of a group of foreign tourists who stripped naked after ascending to the peak of Mount Kinabalu, the highest in South-East Asia.
The mountain is revered by the native communities who hold it to be the home of ancestral spirits.
Ranau police chief Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said police would continue to hunt down the people who had stripped naked on the mountain-top. “If they are still in Sabah, we will hunt them down until we catch them,” he said.
