Parliament has the final say, Kit Siang reminds Salleh

DAP veteran knocks BN man's view that PAC report amounted to the conclusive word about 1MDB.
PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional’s Salleh Said Keruak was given a reminder today that it was Parliament which had the final say about a report on investigations into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
DAP’s Lim Kit Siang said Salleh had been wrong yesterday in saying that the Public Accounts Committee’s (PAC) report was the final and conclusive word on 1MDB.
He said PAC was only a committee of the Dewan Rakyat to which had been delegated the responsibility to inquire into the affairs of 1MDB.
“The final decision whether the PAC Report is satisfactory and complete must come through a resolution after debate on a motion to accept or reject the PAC Report,” he said.
The PAC conducted hearings into 1MDB’s finances and investments last year, while the National Audit Department carried out a forensic audit of the company’s books.
A report by the committee was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat earlier this year, but the Auditor-General’s findings were classified as an official secret and not tabled together with the PAC Report.
Lim said Salleh was wrong to accuse the Sarawak Report web site of misleading the public by publishing leaked extracts of the Auditor-General’s report to the committee.
He noted, however, that Salleh did not suggest that Sarawak Report had presented a false account of the A-G’s report.
Lim said the continued classification of the 1MDB report as an official secret was “most ludicrous and untenable” and accused prime minister Najib Razak’s government of having a lot of things to hide. The classification amounted to “the most unprecedented denial of information to MPs” frustrating them from making a proper judgment on the PAC Report.
The DAP veteran also backed up PAC member Tony Pua, MP for Petaling Jaya Utara, who said earlier today that the PAC report was incomplete without being accompanied by the audit findings.
